Consultations
Senior Sidekicks offers consultations to family caregivers to support, educate, and help cope with the demands of their role. When an individual faces the elder caregiving role; it can be daunting!
We recognize this role touches many parts of the caregiver’s life; the job, and relationships with children and spouse. Caregiving also affects social, religious affiliations. Caregivers who must step back from their careers find their earning power and retirement preparation suffer. Given the profound effects of the caregiver role, it is very important to care for the caregiver. Other family members may want to help but don’t know how.
Our society has not caught up with the new reality of living longer and the need for increased help as we age. By the end of life, each of us will need help with at least 2 of the basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Your elder’s situation is not unique. It has fallen to family caregivers to meet these recent elder care needs; each one on her own! Our lengthening life is a relatively new phenomenon; less than 100 years! There is no national system to educate and support caregivers: yet. In contrast, we have a national system for educating children and we’ve had children for longer than 100 years.
In the meantime, there are services designed to help today’s caregivers. Finding the service is the challenge. Senior Sidekicks consultation helps the caregiver sort through all the options, regulations, and emotions to find the solution that works for them.
Senior Sidekicks main focus is on the caregiver’s needs and questions. Our consultation provides short-term opportunities for the caregivers to bring their concerns to an experienced elder advocate. We discuss topics such as how to evaluate various services, how to help out-of-town family members understand the senior has changed, or where to find an appropriate alternate living situation. We discuss other topics such as the changes in family relations or job-related concerns. We may also discuss how this role is effecting the elder caregiver herself.
